We were sad to hear of the recent passing (13th June) of one of our much-valued Patrons, Susan, Duchess of Richmond. She died peacefully, with family close by, at the age of ninety.

Much-valued Patron

She was passionate about animal welfare, protecting nature and the education of young people. She was responsible for the 11,000-acre Goodwood Home Farm becoming organic and the first 100% organically fed dairy in the country. It was this interest in the wellbeing of farmed animals that led to her becoming a strong supporter of Compassion in World Farming. In turn, we were happy to ask her to be one of our Patrons.

As the Patron of the Circle of Compassion, we were honoured to be invited to, and beneficiaries of, a number of charitable events that she hosted at her home, including, just before the covid lockdown, a wonderful concert, with a brilliant orchestra under the baton of Crispin Ward, one of Compassion’s Visionaries.

An inspiring legacy

She looked after rescued ex-battery hens, and supported a range of animal welfare, environmental and human charities. Susan, Duchess of Richmond will be remembered for her active championing of farm animal welfare and enabling the countryside to thrive throughout her whole life; leaving an inspiring legacy of farming in harmony with nature.
