Compassion in World Farming presented Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards to some of Europe's top food manufacturers, retailers and producers at an awards evening in Paris last night (Thursday 20 October).
Following on from the success of the UK awards in London in July, this year's European Awards were the biggest yet.
Awards were presented in four categories:
- Good Egg
- Good Chicken
- Good Dairy - which was introduced this year
- Leadership in Pig Welfare, exclusive to 2011.
Some 40 organisations from eight countries received awards for their commitment to improving the lives of animals by sourcing only high welfare eggs, chicken, pigmeat or dairy produce.
Good Farm Animal Welfare award winners so far this year are set to improve the lives of more than 60 million hens, chickens, pigs and dairy cows across Europe each year as a result of their policies.
Katy Read, Head of Compassion's Food Business team said: "We're delighted to see so many companies across Europe engaging with us and making steps to improve the lives of millions of farm animals. Such a range of award winners in so many countries demonstrates how important animal welfare is across the continent. These awards are a vital tool that allow us to engage and converse with organisations and is proving to be very successful in helping us forge strong relationships with the food industry."
