Philip Lymbery - Global Chief Executive

Philip has been leading Compassion for more than a decade. He is also Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester, President of Eurogroup for Animals, the Brussels-based umbrella body of 80 leading animal welfare societies in Europe, and a founding Board member of the World Federation for Animals (WFA), a global membership organisation to represent the animal protection movement at intergovernmental level.

Philip is a former ‘Champion’ for the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and was co-lead of the Summit’s Sustainable Livestock Solutions Cluster.

Philip works extensively on issues relating to industrial agriculture, including its impact on animal welfare, wildlife and the environment. He is a recognised thought leader with his lectures taking him across the globe to meet and exchange ideas with like-minded specialists, experts and individuals. He regularly commentates in the media and on speaker platforms about the global effects of industrial farming, including on animal welfare, wildlife, soil and other natural resources, as well as the need for a more balanced, regenerative food system.

He is an ornithologist, photographer, dedicated animal advocate and award-winning author. His critically acclaimed books, Farmageddon: The true cost of cheap meat, and Dead Zone: where the wild things were, were the first mainstream books to show factory farming as a major driver of wildlife declines and at the heart of what needs to change to stave off the climate, nature and pandemic emergencies now facing humanity. His third book, Sixty Harvests Left: How to reach a nature-friendly future, will be published by Bloomsbury in August 2022.
