Animal welfare - key concern for consumers
In a UK survey of more than 100,000 consumers conducted by The Cooperative, animal welfare came out higher than the environment, including climate change, and ranked second amongst what its members saw as the most important concerns. The 2006 ‘Plough to Plate’ report published by Business in the Community also showed that British consumers rate it as the most important priority for food companies.
And they’re not alone in their concern…a 2007 Eurobarometer survey showed that 62% of consumers in France would change where they shop for more animal friendly produce and surprisingly this figure was 60% in Poland, 76% in Portugal, 64% in Spain and 65% in Slovakia.
Many national and multinational companies have already decided it's time to take a lead on farm animal welfare as an integral part of their corporate social responsibility policies.
The world is waking up to farm animal welfare and we want to help you respond.
We offer expert advice on developing general or technical farm animal welfare policies and standards. We also run initiatives to help you shout about the good things you’re doing for farm animals, including the Good Egg Awards and the UK Supermarket Survey.
